About the Division Column Content Left The divisions of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health merged into the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health effective August 1, 2017. Dr. Davey Smith leads the team as Chief of the division. Along with Dr. Smith, the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health will be led by Dr. Constance Benson as the Vice Chief of Education, Dr. Randy Taplitz as the Vice Chief of Clinical Affairs, and Dr. Jamila K. Virus detectives test whole-body scans in search of HIV's hiding places. Antiretroviral drugs have transformed HIV infection from a death sentence to a chronic condition for many people who carry the virus. But because HIV never truly leaves the body, the virus rebounds rapidly if patients stop taking the drugs for even a short time. Center for AIDS Research Funding Renewed for an Old and On-Going Fight . Drs. Davey Smith and Douglas Richman renewed their Center for AIDS Research $15 million federal grant. Announcements Column Content Right Congratulations to Dr. Darcy Wooten on receiving the 2019 Health Sciences Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Award ! This award honors individuals for their outstanding contributions to the mentorship of future leaders in academic medicine. Congratulations to Dr. Annie Cowell for being named the Director of the new Global Health Pathway, starting in July 2020! Amanda Miller was awarded an F31 from NIAAA to investigate the role of intimate partner violence and alcohol use on the HIV cascade of care and treatment in Rakai, Uganda. Congratulations, Amanda! Congratulations to Dr. Shira Goldenberg for being awarded with two large grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for two studies based out of the Centre for Gender and Sexual Health Equity in Vancouver! Dr. Joshua Fierer was selected to receive the 2019 Graduating Housestaff Teaching Award. This award celebrates those that show exceptional commitment to the Internal Medicine Program and to the residents themselves. Congratulations!
